ScottishPower Renewables wins top environmental award
8 December 2009
ScottishPower Renewables has been applauded for its efforts to commercialise tidal stream technology and pursue tidal energy projects in the UK.
ScottishPower Renewables’ and Hammerfest have received a top environmental award for their work on developing tidal energy generation. Recently, in a ceremony at the Scottish Parliament, The Vision in Business for the Environment Awards (VIBES) awarded both companies the International Co-operation accolade for all their efforts.
Few months ago, it was decided that Hammerfest Strøm’s tidal turbine will be reinstalled for research and development. The company is planning to install and test a 1MW full scale demonstration model, HS1000, in Scottish water from 2011. The goal is to have the concept and technology ready and mature for the commercial market in 2010-2011, said Harald Johansen, managing director, Hammerfest Strøm. ScottishPower Renewables became one of the shareholders in the company last year.
Last year, ScottishPower Renewables chose to evaluate three separate coastal sites for the development of the world’s largest tidal stream projects. This was made possible by the successful trial of Lànstrøm. All three projects were to deploy the Lànstrøm tidal turbine developed by Hammerfest Strøm, a company jointly owned by ScottishPower Renewables, StatoilHydro and Hammerfest Energi.
