OPRC unveils its ocean energy generator
11 March 2010
Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) recently showcased its tidal energy underwater electric generator and its Turbine Generator Unit (TGU) support structure in Bangor.
Post this event, the TGU frame was to be shipped to Eastport, where ORPC’s proprietary hydrokinetic turbines were to be installed into the unit prior to deployment in Cobscook Bay in March.
As the company came up with what is being described as the largest ocean energy device ever deployed in US waters, unveiled in Eastport, Christopher Sauer, President and CEO of the company, said, “We will lower the turbine generator unit down so it’s directly underneath the barge and as the tidal currents start to build, it will start turning and generating electricity and then of course it will go into flack tide and stop generating and then when the currents reverse, the barge will actually move around the mooring and will go through the same cycle again.” He shared that same with wabi.tv.
The TGU has a capacity rating of 60 kilowatts. The TGU frame is made up of a combination of steel and composite material. Stillwater Metalworks fabricated the steel components and assembled the frame and Harbor Technologies manufactured the composite components used.
