Canada’s Economic Action Plan to support tidal energy

29 January 2010

Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, Lisa Raitt, has confirmed support for 19 projects under the Clean Energy Fund.

Funding of up to $146 million will support the demonstration of renewable and clean energy across the country, including solar, wind and tidal energy projects. This investment in renewable energy projects has  been made through the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

The Clean Energy Fund is investing nearly $1 billion in technology development and demonstration.

The government also indicated that total investments under the Clean Energy Fund for large and small demonstration projects are benefiting Canada’s economy by leveraging nearly $3.5 billion in further investments by industry and other levels of government.

Specifically in tidal power, the government recently chose to lend more support to Nova Scotia’s tidal energy project in the Bay of Fundy. Canada’s leading research centre for in-stream tidal energy, Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE), has been selected in response to a call for proposals under the Clean and Renewable Energy Demonstrations portion of the fund.

Research from California-based Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) identifies the Bay of Fundy as potentially the best site in North America for tidal power generation. In the Minas Passage alone, EPRI estimated a nearly 300 MW potential.
