Atlantis Resources Corporation is reportedly looking for developers who would be interested in providing an extra 10MW of energy to the firm's proposed tidal-powered data centre.
According to New Energy Focus, the company is opening up its Pentland Firth tidal stream project to a second developer, in an attempt to meet the Crown Estate's licencing requirements. It has decided to take this decision as its "own technology would not be permitted to fulfill the data centre's energy requirements alone".
Recently, it was indicated that Morgan Stanley and Atlantis Resource Corp. are planning a £250 million - £300 million off-grid data centre, powered by tidal energy in Scotland's Pentland Firth. It's thought that the project is to begin operations by 2011. In order to go ahead with the data centre, the companies still need approval from the Crown Estates, which owns the land, the Scottish government and the Highlands Council.
It is being said that Atlantis Resources wants to be the first to take advantage of an imminent decision by the Crown Estate, which owns the seabed, to invite firms to build in the powerful seas off the north coast.
Atlantis Resources has built two turbine types, Nureus and Solon. Nureus is suitable for shallow water up to 25 metres deep and has been generating electricity in a test site in Australia. Solon is a deep-water turbine suitable for installation in some of the world's fastest waters, in depths of at least 40 metres.
