A consortium, called Thetis Energy, is said to be examining the County Antrim coast of Ireland as a possible site for a £300m investment in tidal energy.
The consortium involves Larne-based B9 Energy Offshore Developments, ocean energy company Deepblue Renewables and Statkraft UK, a division of Norway's Statkraft Group.
It is being said that plans are afoot to develop Northern Ireland's second tidal energy system off the north Antrim coast.
"A consortium of companies, one of which was behind controversial plans for an offshore wind farm at the mouth of Lough Foyle, is looking at the potential of siting a series of tidal turbines off Torr Head, close to Ballycastle," reported irishnews.com.
Statkraft Group vice-president of Ocean Energy Petter Hersleth said Northern Ireland had potential to be at the "forefront" of tidal energy production.
"We are eager to facilitate this opportunity and have brought together a combination of international expertise and local knowledge," he said, according to Belfast Telegraph. "We intend to use the best emerging technology to capture the marine tidal energy and make this potential a reality."
